Per yearly tradition, the International Polo Charity Ball will take place on August 5, on the eve of an important polo match between Chile and the US. Hosted by Newport International Polo Series founders Agnes and Dan Keating, the black-tie soirée, themed Con Mucho Gaucho in honor of the legendary South American cowboys, will be held at the storied Newport mansion Rosecliff and welcome the Chilean national polo team as guests of honor.
The evening will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on Rosecliff’s terrace overlooking the Rhode Island Sound, followed by a gourmet dinner and dancing to live Latin music in the grand ballroom, where Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs once hosted Harry Houdini.
The next afternoon, Chile faces off against the US at the historic Glen Farm in Portsmouth. The long-anticipated match is sure to attract a large, mixed crowd of seasonal Newport residents, Palm Beach polo enthusiasts and visitors from Boston, New York and elsewhere—and even pooches are welcome on the polo grounds. A hallmark of New England’s culinary experience, a classic lobster bake by McGrath’s will be prepared fieldside following the game; expect a roaring bonfire and lobsters baked traditionally with hot rocks and seaweed.
If the excitement of the match draws you in, sign up for a group class for those with no previous experience, or for a private class for those with prior training and knowledge of the polo field. The heart of polo in America, the Newport Polo Club offers lessons through the summer and early fall. Matches take place every Saturday at 5 PM through August and at 4 PM during September. Season passes as well as separate match tickets are available.
