We at Boston Common have already had so many not-to-be-missed events in town. We were thrilled to be one of the sponsors of the Grand Cru Wine Lounge at this year’s Boston Wine Expo, and we sponsored the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay’s Rock the Casbah event at the House of Blues. Big Night 2.0 not only supports a great cause, but it’s also a really great time—this year’s rock ’n’ roll theme was especially appropriate as we welcomed the Counting Crows for a hugely successful and fun evening.

The New Year is also off to a running start with many new attractions around town, especially when it comes to shopping. We’re very excited for one of the best suburban retailers, National Jean Company, to be launching in the city. We’re also excited that one of the city’s oldest retailers, Shreve, Crump & Low, is making the move to the prestigious first block of Newbury Street. Both of these moves enhance the character of our most famous shopping street.

Finally, we have to mark the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, or the “Cathedral of Boston,” as it was called in The Town. My own best memory of the park is being on the field with Denis Leary to throw out the first pitch a few years ago. It was truly a wow moment. From the field, home plate felt so close, and I was surprised at how easy it was to pick faces I knew out of the crowd. It’s amazing what a spotlight the pitcher’s mound at Fenway is. I heard from so many people I hadn’t talked to in years, including my sixth-grade teacher. For so many of us, from elementary school teachers to celebrity comedians, it’s true: Fenway is a cathedral for those who worship baseball and the Red Sox. Here’s to a win against the Yanks on the 100th anniversary game!
