What do Michelle Obama,Tina Fey and Angelina Jolie have in common? They’ve all looked fabulously chic wearing Michael Kors. For 30 years, the label has been synonymous with classic American style that is modern, luxurious and sexy. And, as the designer’s Project Runway pal Nina Garcia puts it, you’re never going to be a fashion victim in Michael Kors.
That distinction kept the brand in the not-so-basic black during the recent recession, with women perceiving a Kors purchase as an investment with lasting value. Next year, sources say Michael Kors anticipates approximately $1 billion in sales globally.
Another selling point: The brand has something for almost every age and budget, as evidenced by the customers flocking to the new Michael Kors Lifestyle boutique in Copley Place (stores in Paris and Japan have recently opened as well). A posh wear-everywhere dress can be yours for a very reasonable $130, with the swanky Jet Set chain tote providing major bang for your designer buck at $248. Kors watches also make a timely fashion statement, popular with men as well as women.
If money’s no object, the store also carries coveted top-of-the-line Collection bags and shoes in truly sumptuous leathers. (For Collection clothing, head to Bloomingdale’s.) Further endearing the designer to his female fans, Kors’ clothes don’t begin and end with size six—his Michael Michael Kors line goes up to plus sizes. He’s also an advocate for hiring healthy-weight models to combat anorexia, and spoke publicly on the topic with Vogue editor Anna Wintour during a health and wellness colloquium at Massachusetts General Hospital.
And just last year, the 50-year-old topped off a career of professional accolades by becoming the youngest-ever recipient of the CFDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. What’s new for spring? Dreamy colors, timeless neutrals, sexy sheer fabrics and a feeling of sensual ease. But of Kors!
