The first major trend to emerge from the spring shows was athletic-inspired looks. Refreshingly original and aptly timed with the approach of the London Olympic Games this summer, designers appropriated harness detailing, technical mesh fabrications, and good old-fashioned gym togs to create uniquely spirited ensembles. “I’ve seen athletic inspiration throughout many of the women’s collections for Spring/Summer 2012,” notes Brittney Rothweiler, buyer for The Tannery. “What’s best about this season’s translation of the trend is that it’s not only athletic but sexy at the same time, in a way that’s complimentary to most body types.”

For example, Rag & Bone channeled an adrenaline junky with bungee cords and neon accents, while Alexander Wang reinterpreted the tracksuit in his signature urban aesthetic, and Joseph Altuzarra incorporated parachute buckles and perforated leather into his modern styles.

But it wasn’t only the newcomers embracing the trend. We saw track pants on Gucci’s runway and anoraks on Akris’s. Rothweiler adds, “This look is an easy one for Bostonians to use for updating their wardrobe without being too trendy. It also can transition from day into night seamlessly. Take, for instance, a mesh tank: This can be worn during the day under a blazer with a tank underneath it, perfect for work or daytime errands. Then take off the tank underneath it, put on some feminine underpinnings, throw on some heels, and you’re ready to take on the night!” The Tannery, 711 Boylston St., 617-267-5500.
