Fashion-forward, charity-minded sisters (the daughters of Linda Holliday, Bill Belichick’s longtime partner) Ashley and Katie Hess have an uncanny eye for everything cool—whether it's in Boston, Nantucket, or abroad—and chronicle it all on their blog. We spoke to the duo before they took #NYFW by storm (check it out on their Instagram) to hear about being an affiliate member of AOL's Lifestyle Collective, hanging with Gisele and Bon Jovi, and how to look chic and still represent the Patriots on the sidelines.
What can readers expect from your collaboration with AOL and what types of content are you focused on putting together?
ASHELY HESS: They can expect more consistency. Our content is now planned weekly, consisting of three style posts and an In/Out update on pop culture every Friday.
KATIE HESS: AOL has chosen us to be a part of their Lifestyle Collective group which means they can pull our content for their readers as they wish. We’re pumped about that because it will bring more traffic to our blog of course. They also carefully selected this group of influencers, so we must be doing something right. We’re also looking to add a new section that maps out our favorite points of interest around Boston and cities we’ve visited. In terms of collaborations, we’ve got a few in the works, but are always welcoming more.
What’s the best way to describe Boston's fashion, arts, and culture scene?
AH: On the up and up. So many new events, brands, and shows are developing on the daily right now that it’s difficult to keep up, but fun to attempt.
You two are often spotted on Boston’s red carpets. What’s your favorite local charity?
AH and KH: This is a tough one. Considering we’re on the committee for The Bill Belichick Foundation, The Pink Agenda, and The Lenny Zakim Fund Young Leaders’ Casino Night; we’re going to have to tap out of this one with a three-way tie.
What spring events are on your calendars?
AH: For me, it’s a toss-up between the Rihanna concert and The Pink Agenda’s Boston Gala.
KH: Add Figawi to the mix, and I think that about covers it.
What are your favorite fashion brands?
AH and KH: Reformation, A.L.C., Saint Laurent, Topshop, and Tularosa
You spent four years at a small liberal arts college. What was your fashion take-away?
AH: There is power in numbers. When the both of us experimented with new trends, we nearly immediately saw others imitating our style. Whether they were doing it consciously or subconsciously, we’ll never know, but it was thrilling to see how the two of us could influence a small, concentrated place.
What are your favorite beauty products?
KH: I turned 23 last spring, and now I’m convinced I have a new wrinkle every day, so I’ve started compulsively using age-defying sheet masks. My favorite as of right now is by Dr. Jart+
AH: With winter weather finally settling in, I feel like the heat is always on and threatening to dry out my skin. L’Occitane’s Shower Oil has become my savior.
You two attend almost every New England Patriots game. What is an ideal outfit to wear on the sidelines?
AH and KH: We think it’s important to stay true to your own style, so for us, an ideal outfit is a leather jacket with either Patriots pins or patches on the arm or lapel, a turtleneck in either navy, red, or white, and high-waisted denim. We’ll either opt for pointed-toe ankle boots on the bottom or go more casual with an all-white sneaker. Occasionally, we’ll wear a hat, but that depends on who we’re playing (superstitious reasons).
We hear you're really into cooking these days. What’s on the menu?
KH: I actually consider myself pretty adept when it comes to cooking, at least in the realm of a veggie-centric and pescatarian diet, which I’ve unintentionally adopted. I love making fish tacos when I’m cooking for large groups. When it’s just a few of us, however, I always get requests for smoothie bowls or some variation of a Buddha bowl. And Ashley burns water.
What is the best advice you've ever received?
AH: Drive it like you stole it. It’s our lil’ badass version of the idiom “Fake it ‘til you make it.” One of our friends said this to us before meeting with a major client to remind us what you can get away with when you bring your confidence with you.
And your current favorite fashion items?
AH: My favorite fashion item right now is a bomber jacket. When embellished they can be a little more feminine, and when plain they can be a little sportier.
KH: I’m big on embroidery appliqués right now, whether they’re on clothing and denim or bags and accessories.
What is one trend that you love? And one that needs to go away?
AH: I’m still loving chokers, but I wouldn’t mind if fur-lined loafers mysteriously disappeared.
KH: Faux fur is still a phenomenal alternative to the real deal. I’m going to have to go in with Ashley on the loafers and raise you a floppy hat.
What is the key to wearing clothes well?
KH: Wearing clothes that fit well. And hitting up your tailor when they don’t. I’m 5’4 and know that’s not changing so I tend to shop lines I know will either fit my frame or offer petite sizes.
Your Instagram shots are covetable. How do you do it?
AH and KH: We do all the shooting and editing ourselves. When it comes to Instagram, the best advice we can give is to choose an aesthetic for your feed and find filters that match accordingly. Our favorite photo-editing app is VSCO, and our favorite filters are HB1 or HB2.
Boston's food scene is constantly evolving. What are your go-to restaurants?
AH and KH: Doretta, Toro, and Row 34 are currently on the rotation.
What’s the best thing you've learned from your mom [Linda Holliday]?
KH: Life? Can we say, life? If our mother were a book, she’d be the I Ching, and we’d have read her from front to back and back again. If we had to choose one lesson, it’d go something like, “You’ll never know if you don’t try.”
Who has been your favorite celeb sighting at a Patriots game?
AH and KH: We feel like it’d be a crime to not say Jon Bon Jovi. Plus, he’s still easy on the eyes.
A night in for you two means...
AH: If we’re being honest, we prefer nights out. However, when we do stay in, the night typically involves a bottle of Meomi, facial masks, and a French New Wave film, probably by Truffaut or Goddard.
Hanging with Gisele is...
AH and KH: Unfortunately, not something we would know too much about… But we’d totally be into a workout with her soon.
