Local fashion designer and founder of the Boston-based fitness and lifestyle brand Booty by Brabants, Kelly Brabants, is filling a gap in the swimsuit market with the launch of her revolutionary one-size-fits-most swimsuit line. Brabants first introduced a swimsuit to her clothing line in May of 2016 to sold-out success and returned to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the winter to continue developing the line.
Together with the Rio de Janeiro-based Booty by Brabants design team, Brabants designed ten unique styles of swimsuits. On June 10, don’t miss The BBB Swim Fashion Show at the W Hotel with special performance from Brazilian sensation Rodrigo Marim and music by DJ Pup Dawg. We spoke with Brabants about her new line, launching on May 19 and available here.
Where did you get your inspiration from for the line? Kelly Brabants: Just about every item in my closet can be worn more ways than one. I’ve always been obsessed with versatile pieces and bodysuits that are form-fitting and show off your best assets. Everything you see in this line is something that is signature to me and my brand and what it stands for. The Booty on the Beach: Season 1 swimsuit sold out so fast last summer and with Victoria Secret ending its notorious bathing suit line this year, we saw even more of an opportunity to penetrate the market. Spending time in Brazil is also a huge inspiration behind my whole fashion line; I love going to the beaches there, or the mall, restaurants, etc. and seeing what the fashion trends are. I’ve met and talked to so many Brazilian women who have given me insight to the things they like to wear and the trends in Brazil that we just don’t see much of here in the US - that’s where a lot of my ideas originate from.

Walk us through the process of developing the line. KB: The whole process took about three months. I went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this winter where my design team is based out of and I worked all day and night for almost three weeks on samples until they were perfect. I was going through 3, 4 sometimes 5 samples by literally sewing the fabric on my body and until they were styled exactly how I envisioned them to be. I created the perfect silhouettes that I truly believe women will feel confident in. It was fun creating and designing the tags and packaging there, too, and to have my Mom by my side doing it together was amazing. Her opinion matters the most!
Tell us a little more about the material. KB: The swimsuits are made out of 100 percent luxury lycra material which is basically spandex that’s known for its exceptional stretch and elasticity as well as comfort. This material is amazing and allows for the one-size-fits-most design. Most of my products, including my leggings and sports bras, are made out of lycra.
What styles can we expect? KB: Ranging from $55-$80, each of the bathing suits flaunts an adjustable “cheeky” Brazilian bottom style that won’t budge and I specially designed to flatter the booty. Styles include the Hot Fire, Cocounut Cocktail, and Cloud 9 Cut-Out. Two of my swimsuits are named in Portuguese: The Carioca and the Samba. Carioica is a term to describe the local residents of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Cariocas are known for their warmth and friendliness and just all around positive vibe. My family in Brazil are all Cariocas! I named my other swimsuit Samba, which is a word for the Brazilian musical genre and dance style, because the fun pattern and colorful nature of the suit reminded me of the energy and nightlife in Rio. I also love to dance Samba so this name was a no-brainer for me.
